EURO 2012 Qualifier: France – Bosnia-Herzegovina 1-1

This match was the group decider. France needed a win to secure their passage to the finals without the detour via the play-off. They could stumble at the last hurdle, provided Bosnia-Herzegovina won this match. And this is where this team from the former Yugoslavia is so remarkable. In a group with Romania, Albania and Belorussia, they have come out in the second spot and still challenged France, right up to the last game. Those who made the draw for this group should be congratulated for scripting a thrilling contest until the final whistle tonight.

The Olympic Stadium deal collapsed

That West Ham will not take over the Olympic Stadium after the London 2012 Games for free any more. The plan is that the stadium remains in public hands while the football club could use it for their games but have to pay an annual rent. That would enable London to bid for the 2017 Athletics World Championships to be hold there. The move is applaud-able because the stadium is being built using public money and costing around

on being a fan

Nick Hornby once wrote that it is not us who chose a football team to follow but that the team choses you.

Jonathan Wilson shared his very own take on this view.

Like father, like son: Thoughts on being a fan

Last year, after my dad had died, I stayed holding his hand for about
quarter of an hour and then left the nurses to it. In the hospital
waiting room I made three calls. The first was to Sunderland Civic
Centre to register the death. The second was to the undertakers. And
the third was to the Independent to tell them that I was, after all,
free to cover Sunderland v Burnley the next day.

I know a lot of people found that odd. To be honest, looking back, it

Crush

On Monday Ghana played Brazil in a friendly game at Craven Cottage, the home ground of Fulham, in London. Accounts of those present reports that the game could have ended in a catastrophe. Chaotic ticket allocation and the rumors that tickets were still available on the door, led to a dangerous crush at the gates. But read for yourself:

These accounts describe scenes long thought to be absent from football. However, it happened. More worrying, it happened in London a year before the Olympics. It is worrying that it happened in the first place but more worrying is the response Fulham FC issued to many who went to see the friendly game between Ghana and Brazil.
