A year ago, Arsenal played Bayern at the Emirates in the first knock out stages of the Champions League; they lost the game 3-1 and were given a lesson. However, Arsenal came close to eliminate Bayern in the return leg, winning 2-0. It is widely acknowledged that this performance is the reason for Arsenal’s splendid form in the league.

Yesterday saw a repeat of this fixture but the signs were different. It was Arsenal who played Bayern off the pitch for at least 30 minutes in the first half, until goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was sent off. After that it was pretty much Bayern everywhere; yet they failed to convert their dominance into goals. The final score was 2-0, which should give them security for the return leg but with another courageous performance at the Allianz Arena, Arsenal could make things difficult for the German superclub.
